How did an anime opening song spoke to the Palestinian people? (Ar/En)

In this post, I wrote about the Second uprising of Palestine in 2000 and how it influenced the Arabic version of a dubbed anime song.

Before delving into the text, If you are interested in modern Arabic cultures and arts I think it is worth it to read about and explore the Arabic anime opening songs of the 90s and early 2000s since they had a huge influence that is continuing -or even more evident- to this day.

Their influence goes way beyond their shows since they became the most famous children's songs from that era. Almost any Arab who was raised in an Arabic environment will recognize at least two or three songs. 

Two reasons behind this popularity are their relevance to children and adults alike, as kids would simply enjoy the music and the rhythms of the songs, and when they reflect upon them after growing up they realize the life lessons and how they were connected to their life. 

Another reason is the beauty and the deep poetic meanings of the lyrics. They celebrated the beauty of life and the significance of hope for a better future and persistence while also having a highly moral aspect.

At the same time, they didn’t shy away from portraying the sadness and hardships of life, even though they were aimed at children they discussed themes like grief, loss of loved ones and tragedies of life. But it was always from the aspect of healing and aspiring toward a better future. All of that while still reflecting the theme of the dubbed story and expressing the beauty of it. 

This song is only one example of the brilliance of combining all of these aspects, it is discussing the main themes of the story while also staying connected to the events of the Arab world.

الاِنتِفَاضَة الفلسطينية الثانية

في عامِ 2000 م، اِندَلَعَت الانتفاضة الفِلَسْطينيَّة الثانِية. 

وما أشْعَلَ شَرَارَة الاِنتِفَاضَة هوَ زيارةُ رَئيسِ وزرَاءِ الاحْتِلالِ الصُّهيونِي شَارُون إِلَى المَسْجِدِ الأَقصَى.

أثارَ ذَلِكَ الغَضَبَ العَارِم، وانتَشَرَتِ المُظَاهراتُ والمُواَجَهاتُ معَ جَيشِ الاِحتِلال، واُستُشهِدَ فِيها آلَافُ الفِلَسطينيين.

وأثارتْ هَذهِ الأْحدَاثُ مَوجةً مِنَ الغَضَب فِي أرجَاءِ الوَطَنِ العَرَبيِّ والإِسلاَمي وخَارِجَهُمَا.

وعَبَّرَت مَحَطَّاتُ التِّلفَاز، والمَجَلَّات، ومنَّصَاتُ الإِعلَام، عَن غَضَبِهَا ودَعمِهَا لِقَضِيَّةِ فِلسطين.

وقَد قَامَ الفنَّانون، والأُدَباء، بإنتَاجِ قِصَصٍ وقَصَائدَ وأغانٍ تُعبِّر عن حُبِّهِم لفِلسطين، ورَفضِهِمْ للاحتِلَالِ وعُدوانِه.

وكثيرٌ مِن هَذهِ الأعمَالِ كانَ مُوجَّهًا لأطفالِ العَالمِ العَرَبي.

أغنية أنمي هزيم الرعد

عُرِضَ أنمي هَزيمُ الرَّعْد فِي اليابَانِ عامَ 1994م. 

ويَحكِي الأنِمِي قِصَّةَ مُقَاتِلٍ في الفَضَاءِ يَرْغَبُ بِتَوحِيدِ المَجَرَّةِ ونَشْرِ السَّلَامِ فِيهَا.

وتَمَّتْ دَبلَجَةُ هَذا الأنمي إلى العربية مَعَ أَحدَاثِ الاِنتِفَاضَة.

وَقَد كَتَبَ وَغَنَّى أُغنِيةَ البِدايةِ العَرَبية مُغَنِّي أَغَانِي الأطْفَالِ طَارِق العَرَبِي طَرْقَان.

وَيَحْظَى طَارق العربي طرقان بِشُهرَةٍ وَاسِعَةٍ ومَحَبَّةٍ كَبِيرَةٍ في العالم العربي.

لأنَّه كتب وغنَّى الكثير من أغاني الأطفال في الثَّمَانِينَاتِ والتِّسعِينَات.

واستمرَّ حُبُّ الناس لهذه الأغاني حتى هذا اليوم.

وقَدْ كَانَت كَلِمَاتُ أَغَانِيهِ تَرْبَويَّةً جَمِيلَةً، تَدْعُو إِلَى الخَيرِ والأَمَلِ والشَّجَاعَةِ وحُبِّ الوَطَن.

وعِندَمَا كتبَ كلماتِ أغنيةِ هزيمِ الرَّعد، كانَ مُتَأثِّرًا بأحداثِ الانتفاضةِ الفلسطينية.

وكانتْ قِصَّةُ الأنمي التي تتكلمُ عنِ الشجاعةِ وقتالِ الأعداءِ مُنَاسِبَةً للكتابةِ عَن فِلسطين.

فكتبَ هذهِ الأغنيَّةَ يُخاطبُ فِيها فِلسطِين وشعبَها:

أَبْرِقِي أَرْعِدِي أَبْطَالًا وَعَدُوْكِ أَنْبَلَ وَعَدْ

جَاؤُوكِ بِصوتِ الحَقِّ الهَادِرِ كَهَزِيمِ الرَّعَدْ

بِسِيُوفٍ أَقْوَى مِنْ نَارٍ عَرَفَتْ كَيِفَ الرَّدْ

مَا هِنْتِ ولَنْ تَهِنِي بَلْ مِنْ أَ جلِكَ ثَارَ اَشْتَدَّ

مَا عَاشَ الظَّالِمُ يَسْبِيكِ وفِينَا نَفَسٌ بَعَدْ

بِحَنِينِي بِدَمِي أَفْدِيكِ وَرُوحِي تُنْبِتَ مَجْدْ

وهُنَا رَابِطُ الأُغنِيَّة. 

وفِي السَّطرِين الأخيرين، كانَ ارتِبَاطُ مَعَانِي الأغنية بفلسطين وَاضِحًا.

حَيثُ عَبَّرَ فِيهَا عَن حُبِّهِ لأرضِ فِلسْطِين، وَرَفضِهِ للظّلمِ، وفِدَائِهِ للأرضِ بِدمَائِهِ.

وحتَّى بَعَدَ مُرُورِ 24 عَامًا، مَا تَزَالُ هَذِهِ الأغنيةَ محبوبةً لَدَى النَّاس.

حيثُ كَبِرَ الأطفالُ الذينَ استَمَعُوا لَهَا، وَصَارُوا شَبَابًا، وفَهِمُوا مَعنَى الأغنية، وزادَ حبهم وتَقدِيرهم لهَا.

The Second Palestinian Intifada 

In 2000, The Second Palestinian Intifada broke out

What sparked the fire of the uprising was the visit of Ariel Sharon, the prime minister of the occupation at the time, to the Al-Aqsa mosque.

This ignited the anger of the Palestinians, and protests erupted throughout the country, resulting in the killing of thousands of Palestinians by the Israeli army.  

Following this visit and its indications, a wave of anger erupted throughout the Arabic and Islamic worlds and outside them

TV stations, magazines, and platforms at the time expressed their anger towards the occupation and support of the Palestinian cause. 

In addition, artists and writers created stories, poems and songs that expressed their love for Palestine and their rejection of the occupation and its violence.

Many of these works were also aimed at the children of the Arabic world.

'Thunder Jet' Anime Song

 Thunder Jet Anime was aired first in Japan in 1994.

It tells the story of a space fighter who wanted to unify the galaxy under one rule and spread peace across space.

This anime was dubbed to Arabic during the late 90s to 2000s, which coincided with the events of the Intifada.

Tarek Alarabi Tourgane, a famous children's songs writer, was the writer and singer of the Arabic version of the song. 

Tarek enjoys wide popularity across the Arab world.

Because he wrote and sang many of the children's songs in the 80s and 90s and after.

And the people's love for these songs continues to this day

His lyrics were beautiful and filled with life and moral lessons, celebrating doing good deeds, hope, courage, and love for the homeland.

And when he wrote the lyrics of the Thunder Jet song, he was influenced by the events of the Palestinian Intifada.

And the story of the anime, which revolved around courage and fighting evil, was perfect for writing about Palestine

So he wrote this song in which he is speaking to Palestine and its people, where he expressed his love for Palestine and the condemnation of the oppression.

And even after 24 years, this song is still widely loved across the Arab world. 

Because the kids grew up listening to and are now realizing the true meaning of the song, which further deepened their love and appreciation for the song and the singer.
